The NNLO Junior Awards Scholarship

Nordea Nordic Light Open announces a scholarship -- the NNLO Junior Awards -- for young talents from the Nordic and Baltic regions. “We think it is important that young girls see that support is available,” says Åsa Svensson, NNLO Sports Director.

Up to three scholarships, their values ranging from €1000 to €8000, will be distributed in 2008. The recipients will be the most talented young players of the Nordic and Baltic regions. The drive is a part of the Nordea Nordic Light Open Player Support Program.

– We want to become a part of the young players’ careers on an early stage, and support them all the way to the WTA Tour, says Åsa Svensson, who for long was Sweden’s top female tennis player.

– The scholarship is, in combination with the tournament Nordea Masters where the best junior players of the regions meet to compete, a great springboard to reach higher goals.

Apart from financial aid, the scholarship involves a mentorship with a player of choice from the Nordea Tennis Team -- the next step in the support program. Nordea Tennis Team consists out of Sweden’s number one player Sofia Arvidsson and Fed Cup fighter Johanna Larsson, Danish super-starlet Caroline Wozniacki and Finland’s first lady Emma Laine.

– When I first got out on the tour I had a great support in Åsa Svensson, who then was Sweden’s number one, says Johanna Larsson. She had gone through what I was going through and always knew what to say. It is a great asset to always have an experienced player to consult. I would be more than glad to be of help to a younger player.

Ambitious, driven, talented players might then become a future part of the Nordea Tennis Team themselves, gaining additional financial aid and companionship on the tour.

– Being a part of the Nordea Tennis Team has given me the opportunity to get to know the other girls in the team in a natural way. We sparr together and shop together, which has been very important to me when on tour. Also, the financial aid that I have recieved for training and travels has helped me develop as a player, says Emma Laine.
